The book by the famous French historian Fustel de Coulanges is dedicated to the history of ancient civilizations. The author begins his research with a study of the religion of the ancients. In his opinion, “beliefs about the soul and death” underlie all customs, rituals, and the very way of life of ancient man. Analyzing the relationship between religion, laws and social institutions, Coulanges came to the conclusion that all more or less significant changes in the social life of Greece and Rome were due to changes occurring in the sphere of religious beliefs.

Книга Фюстеля де Куланжа "Давнє місто" є справжнім відкриттям для всіх, хто цікавиться історією Греції та Риму. Автор глибоко аналізує релігійні вірування, які, на його думку, стали основою для формування звичаїв, обрядів та соціального життя стародавніх людей. Його аргументи про те, як зміни у релігії впливали на закони та інститути, вражають своєю логікою та переконливістю. Куланж майстерно поєднує історичні факти з філософськими роздумами, що робить читання не лише пізнавальним, але й надзвичайно захоплюючим. Хоча переклад тексту має деякі недоліки, загальна якість викладу та глибина дослідження компенсують ці недоліки. Рекомендую цю книгу всім, хто прагне зрозуміти, як релігія формувала давні цивілізації та їхній спосіб життя.
