The book by former foreign intelligence officer, KGB Colonel Vladimir Peschersky, recreates a detailed history of the unique intelligence network created on the territory of European states by Soviet military intelligence during the Second World War and called the “Red Chapel”. The book talks about the key stages of creating an intelligence network, lists the organizers of illegal stations and numerous agents who transmitted invaluable information to Soviet intelligence about the plans of Hitler's army, and shows the influence of intelligence on political decisions made by the warring states. *** They were called the “Red Chapel” by the Gestapo. The unique intelligence network organized by Soviet intelligence in Europe became the personification of opposition to Hitler’s rule. The first voluntary Soviet agent was Baron von Possaner, who in 1931 sued Hitler for deceiving the Nazi party and the German people. In Hitler’s inner circle there was another Soviet agent - a former associate and close friend of the Fuhrer, Captain Stennes, who believed that he had betrayed the ideals of Nazism. The leader of the Swiss “Red Three”, the outstanding intelligence officer Sandor Rado, organized the Geopress publishing house, which became a cover for the military intelligence station. At the beginning of the war, an employee of the imperial ministry aviation, Schulze-Boysen informed Soviet intelligence about the location of Hitler's headquarters. Allen Dulles believed that the Red Chapel initially had an anti-Nazi overtones, but then turned into an “organization for supplying information to the Red Army.” Vladimir Peschersky is a former employee of Soviet foreign intelligence. His book is a fundamental study of the activities of the most effective illegal residency of the 20th century, which made an invaluable contribution to the victory over Nazi Germany.
