The carefully developed introduction, the colorful language of the characters in the story, and the characterization of the participants in the “evening at Mr. Finoplentov’s” made in Gogolian traditions bring “The Dog” closer to “Notes of a Hunter.” S.K. Bryullova, in an article about the novel “Nov” (1877), highlights a number of Turgenev’s stories of the 1860–1870s, including “The Dog,” which, in her opinion, are close to “Notes of a Hunter.” At the same time, “The Dog” opens a cycle of “mysterious” stories by Turgenev. It organically combines the everyday and the mysterious, the real and the fantastic. Turgenev here refers to an everyday anecdote with a well-known mystical connotation.
