These essays have undergone a number of metamorphoses. They were first given as lectures at the Eranos Meetings of 1966, 1968 and 1969, then expanded, revised and prepared for publication in the Eranos Yearbook, and later revised again for publication as a series of articles in the journal Art International. Each essay was written to stand on its own, and no further effort was made on the part of the author to give them a new form that would allow them to be perceived as a whole. The minor revisions that the texts underwent in the process of preparing this book were undertaken with one goal - to emphasize the internal connection that exists between the essays and to force the reader to think about the extraordinary psychological phenomenon of the 20th century that I consider analysis.
