Marshal Mikhail Tukhachevsky (1893–1937) is one of the most famous Soviet military leaders, whose name became a symbol of mass repressions against the command of the Red Army in the pre-war years. Numerous publications in recent years do not give a clear answer to the question of who this person was - a brilliant strategist or mediocrity, a patriot of his country or an unprincipled power-lover, a “red Bonaparte.” The mystery of the so-called “military-fascist conspiracy of Tukhachevsky,” which became the reason for the arrest and execution of the marshal and his comrades, has not been resolved either. The extraordinary personality of Tukhachevsky and the dramatic vicissitudes of his biography are the subject of a study by the famous historian Boris Sokolov, the author of more than forty books telling about the history and culture of Russia in the 20th century.
