On an overland journey to a distant spaceport on the medieval planet Marduk, Prince Roger McClintock and the company of marines guarding him cross high mountains, descend into the jungle again and are forced to participate in repelling the invasion of barbarian Boman tribes on the city-states of sedentary Mardukans lying in their path. By teaching their allies military tactics and passing on the basics of necessary technology, the Imperials help the new troops defeat the barbarians, although they suffer their own losses. They manage to reach the sea coast and build the sailing ships needed to sail across the ocean.
