The humorous tale in verse is, according to the author, a continuation of the Russian folk tale "At the Pike's Command." Emelya, having married the tsar’s daughter and became the head of state, was unable to govern it adequately. He goes on a quest for reason in distant lands. The adventures that happen to him are the plot of the story-fairy tale. The drawings in the book are the author's.
