“The night will be calm” is a unique pseudo-interview, a confession of one of the most widely read world classics today. Military pilot, diplomat, hero of World War II, commander of the Legion of Honor, Romain Gary is the only French writer to receive the Goncourt Prize twice: the first time under the name Gary for the novel “The Roots of Heaven”, the second time for the book “The Whole Life Ahead” as an aspiring writer Emil Azhar. The great hoaxer, who wrote under pseudonyms all his life (Gary’s real name is Roman Kasev), decides, on the threshold of his sixtieth birthday, to “reveal” to readers in a frank conversation with his friend and classmate Francois Bondi. However, this is another hoax: Gary is the author of not only his own answers, but also the questions of his interlocutor; Francois Bondy only gave permission to use his name. Subjecting himself to intense interrogation, Gary talks about the most important stages of his life, about the position he chose in the political whirlwind of the 20th century, about the behind-the-scenes diplomatic kitchen, about his mother, about creativity, about love. And many of his statements are perceived today as prophecies.
