Romain Gary (1914–1980) is an outstanding French writer of Russian origin, a man of an unusual and tragic fate, one of the most popular phenomena in modern French prose. The writer’s dying confession, published shortly after his suicide, became a sensation, exposing an unprecedented literary hoax, as a result in which Romain Gary turned out to be the only winner in the world of two Goncourt Prizes. This publication is based on two of the writer’s novels (“The Roots of the Sky”, “The Life Ahead”), which received this high award, as well as a farewell essay that reveals the secret of the authorship of the works written under the pseudonym Emile Azhar.
