Maria Kuntsevich’s work is a notable phenomenon in Polish “women’s” prose of the 1930s–1960s. The writer’s first novel, “Stranger” (1936), depicts the character of an extraordinary woman, a passionate, contradictory nature, in many ways superior to those around her and therefore misunderstood, always “stranger.”
