The work of Maria Kuntsevich is a noticeable phenomenon in Polish “women’s” prose of the 1930s-1960s. The novel “Tristan 1946” was written in 1967 by a mature master. It still has strong romantic motifs, and the plot goes back to the ancient legend of Tristan and Isolde, although the events take place in post-war England and all the characters are our contemporaries. “Tristan 1946” is a novel conceived during the years of emigration, a unique interpretation of the ancient legends, myth in modern clothes. The love story of the Polish “Tristan” and the Irish woman “Isolde”, which lies at the heart of the story, is not inferior to the medieval source in terms of the intensity of passions.
