“On the Spirit of Laws” is the main work of the French enlightenment philosopher Charles Louis Montesquieu (1689-1755), a brilliant expert on history, theory of law and state, one of the founders of the geographical school and sociology, who developed the doctrine of separation of powers. Montesquieu's political and legal ideas had a direct influence on the drafters of the US Constitution, the constitutional legislation of the period of the French Revolution, and the French Civil Code of 1804.
