Medieval historian Mikhail Mayzuls in his book reveals the secrets of medieval images, bringing the reader closer to the answer to the question: “Why might we be interested in the Middle Ages today?” It is impossible to understand the present without knowledge of the past, so the key to today’s popularity of the Middle Ages is in understanding how and what a medieval image speaks to the viewer. Mayzuls’ book talks about the clouds - “bubbles” in which the characters’ lines were recorded, about the frames from which they so often tried to get out, about the marginalia - the bizarre, comical, monstrous, often absurd and obscene inhabitants of the book fields, about how medieval readers spoiled the figures of sinners and demons and various images of the naked body in book miniatures. The history of a medieval image cannot be understood and written without forgetting the viewer who interacted with it, worshiped it or hated it.

The text of the book was translated from the original language using an artificial intelligence program. For the most part, the translation of the text is of very high quality, but in some cases, due to the imperfection of the technology, there may be incorrect phrase translations in the text, as well as single words and expressions may not be translated.
