For two years, intelligence services from eight countries tried to help their Swiss colleagues investigate a criminal case instigated in Geneva against Russian citizen Sergei Mikhailov. Newspapers around the world, having forgotten about his real name, called Mikhailov nothing more than Mikhas, “the godfather of the Russian mafia,” the leader of the “Solntsevskaya” criminal group. Journalists called this trial the trial of the twentieth century, calculating that it was the most expensive criminal case in Europe. But in the 72 volumes presented to the court, the jury did not find a single fact that would allow them to call Sergei Mikhailov guilty. Taxpayers have not forgiven their justice officials for such a deafening and shameful failure. Swiss Prosecutor General Carla del Ponte, investigative judge Zekschen, and other major officials of the prosecutor's office and police lost their positions. And Mikhailov was paid an unprecedented monetary compensation for Switzerland.
