Self-portrait in the office

This is a poetic essay by one of the main figures of modern intellectual thought, Giorgio Agamben (b. 1942). By showing his reader the offices in which he had to work, the Italian philosopher tries to build his self-portrait through the things that were there. For Agamben, it is possible to talk about himself only by talking about others: poets, philosophers, artists, friends who created his memories and inspired him to write. Therefore, the philosopher’s self-portrait turns out to be inextricably linked with Martin Heidegger and his seminars in Le Thor, the books of Hannah Arendt, the Italian intelligentsia and philosophical reflections on the nature of memory, love and writing.
