The second book of the three-volume series about the Norwegian traveler Thor Heyerdahl covers the period from October 1947 to 1970. The trip to Polynesia on the balsa raft Kon-Tiki made Heyerdahl famous. The book and film about this voyage turned him into the most famous Norwegian and brought him financial success. But it was much more difficult to convince the academic world of the seriousness of Heyerdahl's scientific concept of the settlement of Polynesia. Heyerdahl's herculean efforts in this direction form a significant part of Ragnar Kvam's narrative. The biographer tells in detail and very entertainingly about Heyerdahl's search for traces of South American Indians in the Galapagos Islands and about the expedition to Easter Island. He also described two attempts to cross the Atlantic Ocean on a reed boat (“Ra-I” and “Ra-II”). From the pages of the book, Heyerdahl's social and family life appears multifaceted. He was not only a fanatical traveler and a gifted researcher, but also a true “citizen of the world” who sought to draw the attention of the UN to the problem of pollution of the world’s oceans, uniting people from different countries in his team.
