Найджел, повернувшись один, стає головним підозрюваним у справі, і читач разом з ним переживає всі емоції: від страху до безнадії. Автор майстерно грає на контрастах, змушуючи читача сумніватися у вірності Найджела та його розповіді. Паралельно розвивається сюжетна лінія з Майлзом і Анджелою, які стають адвокатами Найджела, і їхній пошук правди додає додаткового напруження.
