The golden age of the British detective story is G. K. Chesterton, Agatha Christie, Dorothy L. Sayers; this is the author of “Winnie the Pooh” A. A. Milne, the poet Cecil Day-Lewis, as well as many very different and original authors, many of whom are completely unknown to the Russian reader. They all belonged to the same circle, communicated, were friends and turned detective writing into an exciting intellectual game. They created a Detective Club with a whole system of rules and rituals, composed collective opuses and tried to solve real crimes. All this frivolous, cheerful creativity occurred mainly in the twenties and thirties of the 20th century - the peaceful period between two terrible wars. An alarming, reckless, nostalgic era is frozen in detective stories, like a fly in amber - the reader can only turn the page and immerse himself in this interesting world. The book is illustrated with drawings from magazines of the 1920s-1930s, equipped with a preface, commentary and glossary in pictures.
