In 1876, a small book “Fireflies” or a story “for small and large children” was anonymously published in a private Prague printing house. Soon critics enthusiastically called the author “the Czech Andersen” and his name appeared in the next edition. He turned out to be the priest-evangelist Jan Karafiat. Like in a drop of water, in the short life of the family of fireflies, the author reflected the entire earthly existence - happy childhood and youth in the parental home, the responsibility of an adult for the cause he serves, the joy of having a family and raising children, the pain of loss - in submission to the mysterious Divine plan (fireflies do not know why they should shine for people every night) and in trust in His good will (the Lord cares about obedient fireflies even to death), the author sees the meaning and joy of life.
