St. Theophan the Recluse (in the world Georgy Vasilyevich Govorov; 1815–1894) is a theologian, publicist and preacher. He occupies a special place among Russian preachers and saints of the 19th century. The saint saw his service to the Church of God in the feat of spiritual and literary creativity. “Writing,” he said, “is a necessary service for the Church.” He devoted his entire pastoral activity to clarifying the path of a truly Christian life based on spiritual composure. Theophan the Recluse left a huge theological legacy: works on explaining the word of God, translation works, works on asceticism and psychology. His works amaze with their encyclopedic breadth and diversity of theological interests. The book includes letters that share a common theme - issues of faith. The saint, answering questions from his correspondents, speaks about the dogmas of the Orthodox Church and heresies, about false spiritual ascent and possible temptations, about the Second Coming of Christ and about the general resurrection. The letters of St. Theophan are an inexhaustible source of edification and spiritual benefit; they elevate the reader to the knowledge of the truth and confirm him in faith.
