The Encyclopedia of Banned Cinema tells the story of 125 famous films that were censored to one degree or another in the United States. It contains an analysis of the most notable films, as well as those measures and mechanisms that have changed over more than a century of cinema history that were used to completely or partially ban films. Political, public, religious organizations, representatives of sexual minorities and marginal groups and simply respectable citizens — they all consider themselves to have the right to dictate to artists. Soviet citizens who grew up under censorship will be curious to know how films such as Emmanuelle and A Farewell to Arms, The Great Dictator and La Dolce Vita were banned, shredded and mutilated. Соува, майстерно аналізує 125 фільмів, які стали жертвами цензурних заходів у США, і робить це з величезним захопленням та знанням справи. Читачі дізнаються не лише про самі фільми, але й про культурний контекст, в якому вони були створені, а також про механізми, які використовувалися для їхньої заборони. Особливо цікаво спостерігати, як змінювалися погляди на мистецтво та свободу слова протягом століть.
