In the second part of the trilogy, Max leaves the hospital and becomes an employee of the Phoenix Project. Relying more on strong tea and youthful enthusiasm than on previous experience, he must seek out and treat his motley crew of patients that his year of internship has not prepared him for, from Molly, an 80-year-old drug courier, to God, who dwells in a supermarket parking lot, and mothers of families dependent on the opinions of neighbors and painkillers. Friends do not approve of his choice, his mother is worried about him, and passers-by on the streets spit at him, but Max is determined to change the lives of homeless people and drug addicts for the better.
