Автори майстерно поєднують наукову фантастику з елементами пригод, створюючи неймовірну атмосферу та інтригу. Сюжет про вченого Джека Кіркланда, який намагається розгадати таємницю кристалічної колони на дні океану, захоплює та спонукає до роздумів про минуле людства та його зв'язок із природою. Описані природні катастрофи, які спровоковані спалахом на Сонці, настільки реалістичні, що читач відчуває себе частиною цієї катастрофи.
