Rather little is known about the life of Louise Labe (1525-1566), poetess of the Renaissance. The daughter of a Lyon ropemaker (hence the nickname “Beautiful ropemaker”), she married a wealthy manufacturer Perrin, and her house became the center of educated society in Lyon. Unhappy love for a young nobleman (apparently, even before marriage) gave rise to her fiery poems - 3 elegies and 24 sonnets, published together with the beautiful allegory “The Dispute of Madness and Love” in 1555. Labe's sonnets are among the first in French. Her work is undoubtedly influenced by Italian poetry, primarily Petrarch. The publication includes all 24 sonnets of Louise Labe translated by Igor Boykov.
