The twenties and fifties in America were the heyday of popular “reader” magazines, which helped shape the rapidly developing genres of fantasy, science fiction and horror. In 1923, the first issue of “Weird tales” was published, which had about the same significance for the “scary” direction of American literature as Campbell’s later “Astounding science fiction” did for science fiction. Fans of Gothic, which was designated by the word “macabre” (“dark, creepy, terrible”), had the opportunity to get acquainted with the works of authors who soon became more popular than Machen, Hodgson, Dunsany and their other older British colleagues.

The text of the book was translated from the original language using an artificial intelligence program. For the most part, the translation of the text is of very high quality, but in some cases, due to the imperfection of the technology, there may be incorrect phrase translations in the text, as well as single words and expressions may not be translated.
