The First Crusade attracted a variety of people to the East, from noble idealists to real robbers. The Russian master Timofey Cherny was also in this motley army. The combat vehicles he created enjoyed well-deserved fame among the crusaders, but it was his ability to solve crimes that brought him real fame. It all started in a small fortress on the very border of the county of Tripoli from the day when the fortress was attacked by the Saracens. The crusaders easily repelled the first assault, but immediately after the battle it became clear that in the fortress itself someone had killed the leader of the Knights Hospitaller, Sir Gerard of Boulogne. At first glance, it looked as if the knight had been killed by one of the attackers, but not a single Saracen managed to break into the fortress. Therefore, the killer is one of his own.
