But every absence of Death leads to confusion in his domain. The auditors of reality are not asleep: the slightest mistake - and they will erase this world that exists on debt. Reality is so fragile, and people’s interventions in the normal course of things, even with the best intentions, confuse everything so much that Death will break his leg. I should give this small fry a whack with a scythe so they don’t mind their own business! But he won't. The old man has a kind bone heart.  “It’s twelve o’clock at night and everything is calm!” - this is the motto of the Night Guard of Ankh-Morpork, the most glorious city on the entire Discworld.
