Among the many cultural monuments of the Moscow region, the estate in the village of Arkhangelskoye occupies a special place. Its history is an alternation of periods of prosperity, decline and complete oblivion. In its heyday, it was used for entertainment and has had two owners, whose names were familiar to every Russian then and are not forgotten now. None of the owners spared any expense in decorating it, and Arkhangelskoye, having absorbed the achievements of Western European art, became, oddly enough, an example of purely Russian culture. Meanwhile, today, in front of the famous estate, which has long become a museum and only recently attracted the attention of the Ministry of Culture, there is a downright Shakespearean question: “To be or not to be?” The maintenance of a grandiose complex, in addition to funds, also requires what the former owners had and what the museum staff does not have. Today no one knows whether the creation of princes Golitsyn and Yusupov will be able to continue to exist or die, going to pieces. However, time will tell.
