This publication publishes the correspondence of Vasily Maklakov (1869-1957), lawyer, member of the Central Committee of the Cadet Party, deputy of the 2-4th State Dumas, ambassador of the Provisional Government in France, and then head of the Office for Russian Refugees in Paris, and Mark Aldanov (1886-1957), one of the most popular writers of the Russian diaspora, for the years 1929-1957. The correspondence is preserved in the archives of the Hoover Institution at Stanford University (California) and in the Bakhmetev Archive at Columbia University (New York). The correspondence contains information about disputes in the emigrant community on the issue of attitudes towards Soviet power, the Vlasov movement and the problem of collaboration in general, about the activities of various emigrant post-war political organizations, about outstanding emigration figures - I. A. Bunin, A. F. Kerensky , S.P. Melgunov, B.I. Nikolaevsky and many others. Maklakov and Aldanov discussed the problem of the relationship between individual rights and the state - “human rights and empire”, features of the genre of the historical novel, the question of chance and patterns in history. The value of the correspondence lies not only in the fact that it is a wonderful source on the history of Russian political thought of the 20th century, on the history and culture of Russian emigration, and the history of Russian literature. Correspondence is a brilliant example of the epistolary genre. The publication may be useful to teachers and researchers of Russian history and literature of the 20th century, students, and also of interest to a wider circle of readers.
