In the human world, as in the animal world, representatives of different sexes behave differently. Based on scientific data, de Waal argues that in order to understand the nature that determines the difference between masculinity and femininity, one must see the diversity of qualities of primates and other mammals, without giving preference to any gender. Автор, спираючись на свої багаторічні спостереження за приматами, ставить під сумнів традиційні уявлення про чоловічу агресію та жіночу ніжність, пропонуючи читачеві новий погляд на ці стереотипи. Де Вааль майстерно проводить паралелі між поведінкою тварин і людьми, демонструючи, що багато з того, що ми вважаємо "природним", насправді є соціальними конструкціями. Його аналіз різноманітності поведінки серед різних видів приматів, зокрема контраст між агресивними шимпанзе та миролюбними бонобо, відкриває нові горизонти для розуміння гендерних відносин.
