Van Gerden is a complex person, talented, strong and courageous, but at some point he betrayed himself. An excellent police officer, he became disillusioned with people, firmly believing that they were driven only by evil and fear of death. This happened after his beloved partner died before his eyes. Van Gerden, now a private detective, was brought out of the dead end of his life by a meeting with lawyer Hope Beneke. Assertive and positive, Hope challenged him, offering to find a sadistic killer within a week.
