The novel by one of the greatest modern Swedish writers is based on a tragic episode in the history of Denmark. German physician Johann Friedrich Struense (1737–1772) gains unlimited power for four years through his influence over the mentally ill King Christian VII. A love affair with the queen adds additional drama to his situation. The attempt to transform Denmark into an enlightened monarchy ended tragically: the reformer’s activities were stopped, and he himself was executed. “The Doctor’s Visit” is not only a historical novel, but also a psychological and philosophical one. The attractiveness of the author's position lies in the absence of straightforwardness and unambiguous assessments.
