"A Brief History of Ukrainian Tractors" and "Desperate Housewives" collide in this fascinating excursion into the growing industry of correspondence brides - a business in which love and marriage are closely intertwined with sex and commerce. The Ukrainian city of Odessa is the humorous capital of the former USSR - appears to be a city turned upside down, where waiters earn more than doctors, where bandits are in charge, in whose hands everything from spare parts for telephones to medicines is concentrated, a city where no one laughs anymore. After months of searching for a job, engineering graduate Daria gets a good position as a secretary in a foreign company. But every worthy position has its own shortcomings, and in Daria’s case, this is the boss, Mr. Harmon, who made it clear to her that her first duty is to satisfy his sexual appetites. Daria manages to avoid Harmon's harassment by persuading her neighbor Olga to become his mistress, but she soon sets her sights on Daria's position. Meanwhile, the heroine begins working as a translator at the marriage agency "Advice and Love", which organizes evenings where single Americans meet those looking for themselves a couple of Odessa residents. Daria's grandmother wants her granddaughter to leave Ukraine forever, and in every possible way persuades her to marry a foreigner, but Daria is already in love with a local guy. She has to make a choice between her home country and America, between the charming and irresponsible bandit Vlad and the teacher Tristan, who is twice her age. For obvious reasons, Daria chooses safety and America, but life there turns out to be completely different from what she imagined in her dreams..."Odessa Happiness" is an ironic, gentle and darkly humorous novel about marriage, about desires, the fulfillment of which should be feared, and about the consequences of the construction of communism. This is a novel about the choice and sacrifices that people make in pursuit of love and stability.
