Mikhail Roshchin’s play “Valentin and Valentina” (1970) needs no introduction. She was incredibly popular, and, in fact, the fame of the playwright Roshchin began with her. In the Soviet Union, perhaps, there was no city where there was a drama theater and the play “Valentin and Valentina” was not performed. It was first staged almost simultaneously, in 1971, by Sovremennik (dir. V. Fokin) and the Moscow Art Theater (dir. O. Efremov), and after them by G. Tovstonogov, R. Viktyuk and others. A film was also made based on the play (directed by G. Nathanson, 1987).
