The First Punic War was destined to forever remain in the shadow of the second war between Rome and Carthage. The naval battles of Milae and Eknoma, the grandiose battles on land at Panorma and Bagrada were forgotten against the backdrop of Hannibal's brilliant victories at Trebbia, Lake Trasimene and Cannae. Despite this, the First Punic was one of the largest military confrontations of the Ancient World, which lasted twenty-three years. No wonder the ancient Greek historian of the 2nd century BC. e. Polybius speaks clearly and unequivocally: it is the First Punic that is the most significant war between the two superpowers of Antiquity. The fighting of this war took place in Sicily and Africa. Armies of thousands fought on the battlefields, and huge fleets perished in naval battles and from the violence of the elements. The scales constantly fluctuated first one way or the other, and no one could predict which side would win.
