The First Punic War was destined to forever remain in the shadow of the second war between Rome and Carthage. Armies of thousands fought on the battlefields, and huge fleets perished in naval battles and from the violence of the elements. The scales constantly fluctuated first one way or the other, and no one could predict which side would win.
