The writer was born in December 1903 in New York. Cornell Woolrich spent his childhood in Mexico, where his father worked. After his parents divorced, Woolrich and his mother returned to his native New York, where he entered Columbia University to study journalism. Three years later, Woolrich dropped out of university to pursue literary studies. The first literary experiments were imitation of Fitzgerald. Woolrich's debut work was awarded a prize at the First National Literary Competition. In 1929, the novel was filmed.  Woolrich's The Bride Wore Black was published in 1940. Woolrich's famous “black series” began with this novel. Woolrich’s personal life became a reflection of the writer’s darkest “black novels.” Despite the fact that Woolrich was a very wealthy man, he lived in one of the poorest hotels in New York, which was also a gathering center for all sorts of petty criminals. In one of his interviews, William Irish said that he never knew any other hobbies or activities besides literature, and therefore every day of his life is similar to the previous one.1.
