When Lermontov’s “Bela” appeared on the pages of “Notes of the Fatherland,” Belinsky wrote: “Reading Mr. Lermontov’s wonderful story can also be useful to many as an antidote to reading Marlinsky’s stories.” Belinsky’s words were extremely significant. By 1839, there was an urgent need to counter Marlinsky’s romanticism with a new literary method with fairly strong representatives.
