The question of Lermontov’s attitude to Russian folklore arose during his lifetime of criticism - in connection with “The Song about Tsar Ivan Vasilyevich” and some later poems. A special role here belonged to Belinsky’s articles, which contained a deep interpretation of Lermontov’s works precisely in the connection that interests us, although they did not specifically pose the problem of “Lermontov and folklore.”
