Eugene Sue (real name Marie-Joseph; 1804–1857) - French writer. Born into the family of a famous surgeon who served at Napoleon's court. In 1825–1827, Sue, as a military doctor, participated in naval expeditions of the French fleet, including the bloody Battle of Navarino. As a writer, Sue began in 1832 with adventure maritime novels, and later moved on to historical novels; which were followed by everyday ones (sometimes called “salon ones”). But it was the famous social adventurous novels “Parisian Mysteries” and “The Eternal Jew” created later that brought him real literary fame. The novels “The Sea Robber” and “Plik and Plok” were created by the writer in the very the beginning of a creative career. Already in them, Eugene Sue showed himself to be a fascinating storyteller, showing rich imagination in describing the sea and everyday life at sea. Colonial expansion (the capture of Algeria, etc.) aroused in the 30s. XIX century keen interest in exotic countries. All this ensured the success of Xiu's adventure novels, where proud, vain personalities, mysterious villains and insanely brave sea wolves act against the backdrop of tropical landscapes.
