The author of this publication, Allen Dulles, who held diplomatic posts in Vienna and Bern during World War I, then served in the State Department and later became director of the CIA, was the head of the American Intelligence Center in Bern during World War II. In 1942, on instructions from the Center, he established contact with the German underground, which more than once organized attempts on Hitler’s life. His story of the German resistance, of contacts between the Allies and the opposition, is the story of people from all levels of German society - from leading figures such as the military leaders L. Beck, K. Goerdeler, K. Hammerstein, to ordinary civil servants, intellectuals, representatives of trade unions and the church , united in the Kreisau circle, who risked their lives in the fight against Hitlerism for individual freedom. This is a book about anti-Nazi opposition to the totalitarian regime.
