Michel Tournier (born 1924) is a renowned French writer and member of the Académie Goncourt. In the novel “Eleazar or the Spring and the Bush,” he tells the story of an Irish pastor who took his family to America. This journey lasted forty days, full of hardship and torment, similar to the forty-year wanderings of the prophet Moses, leading his people to the Promised Land. The bright image of the folk heroine Joan of Arc inspired many writers. Michel Tournier describes the story of the friendship of such different people - the peasant girl Jeanne and the noble lord Gilles de Rais, their military exploits and a terrible end.
