The Forest King is the second novel by Michel Tournier, one of the most prominent French writers of the second half of the 20th century. The plot of the novel is based on ancient German legends about the Forest King, the kidnapper and murderer of children. The use of a “mythological” perspective allows the author to deeply explore the phenomenon and magical nature of fascism... The novel strengthened Tournier’s fame and was awarded the Goncourt Prize. In 1996, the novel was made into a film starring John Malkovich.
