Having gone to Rome, on the way, instead of a pilgrimage, he plunged into the abyss of passions, became entangled in intrigues and connections, committed numerous atrocities and became the plaything of mysterious hellish forces that threw him from place to place and from crime to crime. First translated by V. L. Rantsov was published in 1897 as part of the complete works of Hoffmann.
