In the early 1070s. A young, well-educated novice settled in the Pechersky Monastery near Kiev, the future famous monastery. We don’t know either his worldly name or how he lived until he was 17 years old. But much of what is now known about Ancient Rus' of the 9th–11th centuries was preserved by the pen of this particular person - the Venerable Nestor the Chronicler. Nestor's youth fell during the years of the "triumvirate" of the Yaroslavich princes - the sons of Yaroslav the Wise. This is the time of the first clashes of Rus' with a new wave of steppe aggressors - the Polovtsians; the time when in the baptized Russian land the pagan “opposition” raised its head high and revolts led by the Magi broke out across the country; the time when many traditions of Holy Rus' were laid in the Pechersky Monastery; finally, the time when the princely “triumvirate” showed a big crack and the dying covenant of Yaroslav the Wise to “live in love” was almost forgotten.
