What could be more pleasant than two weeks of relaxation in an old country house, where a hospitable aunt is in charge? So Ellie, the heroine of Elizabeth Peters’ book “The Devil Knows,” in anticipation of blissful idleness, agrees to stay with her beloved aunt, but finds herself drawn into a mysterious and creepy game of ghosts. The mistress of the house is an old lady and is indeed extremely hospitable, but very, very eccentric; in the area she is seriously revered as a witch. Shocking neighbors with wild dances, setting up a trick or starting a scandal is the greatest pleasure for an old woman. Especially if the scandal drives the smug groom away from his niece. And having sent lichen to the poor young man, you can go on a trip with a light heart... Remaining in the company of her aunt’s favorites - numerous cats and dogs - Ellie is gradually drawn into strange events, fascinating in their inexplicability. Being particularly curious and not at all timid, the girl accepts the challenge and decides to conduct her own investigation in order to bring the intriguers to light. The first step is to deal with the gardener, who walks around the house at night in the guise of a ghost. True, the ghost turns out to be a very real person, and also sarcastic and mocking. But Ellie is no slouch either – the girl has fully inherited her aunt’s sense of humor and assertiveness.
