The Last Camel Died at Noon is the sixth novel in a series of historical detective novels starring fictional detective and archaeologist Amelia Peabody, written by Elizabeth Peters.
From the translator
The sixth novel featuring about Amelia Peabody and her family, is noticeably different from the previous ones: the detective intrigue is barely noticeable and is in the background. As Elizabeth Peters herself admits, “The Last Camel” was written in the style of adventure works by the outstanding English writer Henry Rider Haggard. And in the text itself there are many references (often ironically played out) to various stories and novels of this writer. “Camel” was published in 1991. Its action takes place at the end of the 19th century (in accordance with the chronographic list - in 1897-98). Despite all the fairly high-quality stylization in the language of artistic works of a century ago, there are still quite modern expressions in the text. When translating, I tried to preserve the features of the style, including artificially “aging” what was out of the general picture: “information” instead of “information” ", "position" or "position" instead of "localization", "locality" instead of "region", etc. The titles of the nobility are translated as they are given by the author. It is clear that in Ancient Egypt there were neither princes nor counts, and what is meant is only an approximate correspondence of the then ranks to the current ones.
