Robertson Davis is a major Canadian writer, a master of plot intricacies and riddles, one of the best storytellers in English literature. His “Deptford Trilogy” (“The Fifth Character,” “Manticore,” “World of Wonders”) was considered the beginning of the “Canadian breakthrough” in world literature. He was shortlisted for the Booker (with the novel “What’s in the Bones” from the “Cornish Trilogy”), was awarded the main Canadian literary award - the Governor General’s Award, at the end of his life he almost received the Nobel Prize, but even though he remained forever among the candidates, won the status of a world classic. “Printers find from experience that one Murder is worth two Monsters and no less than three Restless Spirits,” wrote the 17th-century English satirist Samuel Butler. “But if Restless Spirits are added to Murder, no other Story can compare with this.” And the hero of this novel will have to test this wise thought on his own experience: it is precisely the restless spirit that Connor Gilmartin, editor of the culture department at the newspaper “Voice”, becomes in the very first lines, having caught his wife in bed with her lover and received from him (his subordinate, a theater critic) with a baton to the head. And then someone unknown takes Connor’s soul first “to the eighteenth century, which, in terms of the entire history of mankind, was almost yesterday,” and doesn’t stop there; and now “Davis’ signature time machine unfolds before us colorful pictures of the past, full of wonder and mischief” (The Los Angeles Times Book Review). Why does Connor discover pictures from the life of his own ancestors and what does the church called “The Fellowship of Emmanuel Swedenborg, Scientist and Seer” have to do with it?
