Raymond Chandler's books about Philip Marlowe not only laid the foundations for the hardboiled detective genre, but also became modern classics in the broadest sense. This edition contains the first three novels about the famous private detective - “The Eternal Dream”, “Farewell, Beauty” and “The High Window”. Marlowe represents a new type of detective hero: he is a romantic, sentimental knight, always maintaining his individuality and observing a code of honor. He is not looking for adventure - they find it themselves, and the plot, replete with signature dizzying intricacies, begins, as a rule, quite innocently. Thus, in “The Eternal Sleep,” retired General Sternwood instructs Marlowe to deal with an adventurer who is blackmailing his youngest daughter; in the first scene of the novel "Farewell, Beauty" the detective only reminds one thug that you have to pay for drinking; and in “The High Window,” the widow Mrs. Murdoch instructs Marlowe to find Brasher’s doubloon, a rare gold coin missing from her late husband’s collection... Several reference noir films have been based on Chandler’s stories, and for many, the image of Marlowe is strongly associated with the personality of Humphrey Bogart, several times who has played the role since the 1946 film adaptation of The Eternal Sleep, directed by Howard Hawks and co-written by William Faulkner. But Bogart was not the first: even before his “The Eternal Sleep”, two film adaptations of the novel “Farewell, Beautiful” were shot - with George Sanders in 1942 and with Dick Powell in 1944. "The High Window" was filmed twice: in 1942 under the title "A Time to Kill" and in 1947 as "Brasher's Doubloon" ("Blood Money" in Russian translation), and in the latter film the role of Marlowe was played by western star George Montgomery. Contents: Eternal Sleep (novel, translated by A. Livergant), pp. 5-214 Farewell, Beauty (novel, translated by D. Voznyakevich), pp. 215-460 The High Window (novel, translated by A. Livergant), pp. 461-669
