This incident occurred in 667 AD in Hanyuan, an ancient small town built on the shore of a lake near the capital. Here Judge Dee will have to unravel the murder of an elderly poet who lived as a hermit on his modest estate outside the Willow Quarter, a haven for courtesans and singers. The poet was killed while peacefully contemplating the moon in his garden pavilion, located in the middle of a pond overgrown with lotuses. There were no witnesses - or so it seemed.
