In achieving our goals in life and position in society, we are in networks of relationships, and no achievements are possible without the consent of other people. It is important for us to hear “yes,” but even when it is heard, we cannot be sure that promises will be fulfilled. And when we receive what we were promised, most often it turns out that this is not at all what we wanted. Reciprocity always creates paradoxes, because relationships have obvious and hidden sides. Mastery in life is possessed only by those who know how to remain honest under any circumstances without the slightest harm to themselves. Wise behavior, necessary for every person, has become a whole science in India since ancient times, known as niti-shastra. In ancient times, a collection of edifying stories was called “Panchatantra”, and its continuation was the medieval “Hitopadesha”, dedicated to the art of relationships. Mastering the art of relationships will allow us to anticipate the paradoxes of reciprocity, guessing the hidden subtext of “yes” on the part of our neighbors. Hitopadesha teaches us to be together and remain ourselves, to find friends and endure separation, to rebel and forgive. Everything comes to some and goes away from others depending on the balance of power in society. It is only important to be aware of the laws by which we create the “rotation of the stars” around us.
